This legislation addresses the trends cited by Suffolk County Comprehensive Water Resources Management Plan, which highlights nitrogen contamination in groundwater, drinking water, and surface water resulting from legacy onsite wastewater disposal systems. These negative trends can cause algal blooms and chemical processes that negatively affect marine life and coastal resiliency. The grant, which was first received on 4/1/2017, provides an additional 50% grant funding in the amount of $1,500,000. The funds will be used to expand the Suffolk County Upgrade Program Enterprise (SCUPE) program and will support staffing and other resources to further facilitate the restoration and protection of Suffolk County’s water.
